Department of Philosophy

What is ultimately real? What is the nature and extent of our knowledge? Is beauty only in the eye of the beholder? Philosophy seeks answers to these kinds of fundamental questions. Students who study philosophy can gain an appreciation of the various answers to such questions as well as formulate their own answers.

The philosophy major is designed to give students an understanding of the historical development of philosophic concepts and to introduce students to the logical tools applicable to philosophic work. Many students are double majors because they find that the study of philosphy and the study of a particular discipline (such as sociology or biology) are mutually enhancing.
