The Department is proud to have a new language laboratory
for computer-assisted language learning. It is located in Bradley
409 and is entered through Bradley 423, the room at the heart
of the multimedia center. There are 16 MACs, available to students
for individual work and to teachers for conducting a whole class
there. It is open Monday through Thursday from 8:30 to 3:30 and
Friday till 6:00.
What can you do in the lab? It is amazingly versatile.
Log into the Rutgers home page, click on “languages”
(displayed on the bar below the URL bar), and click on the language
you are studying. You will see various programs which professors
have had installed to facilitate or supplement classroom activities.
Currently French offers a number of internet sites featuring media,
phonetics exercises, and governmental and cultural information.
Portuguese provides entry into the Virtual Center of the Camoens
Institute where you can tap in to instruction in language, culture,
linguistics, and teaching methods. Other language areas are in
the process of adding their material.
Working in pairs and in groups, you can enter a
MOO—a sophisticated chat room set up by your professor—to
exchange conversation and ideas.
If you are interested in learning a language not
currently taught in the classroom, there will soon be a library
of programs that can be studied at your own pace during the year.
Watch this site for a list of these new acquisitions.
